How Can Math and Numbers be Emotional?

I had a statement come in through my website that prompted an idea for this video. I 100% understand and respect where this person is coming from and why they viewed the situation the way they did. At the core, the stock market “is numbers” and numbers are… well… simply numbers. What is there to be emotional about? Let’s go further down this rabbit hole!

Numbers. They're just numbers, right? And numbers, they're not emotional. You would think so, but not in the world of trading.(dramatic music)I'm very excited about this video. It never really dawned on me to talk about this.I have talked about it in roundabout ways, but thanks to a message that I got through our website, this person who's clearly new, and that's fine, there's nothing wrong with being new. They threw out a couple, accusation's not quite the right word. They threw out a couple bullet points, if you will. They were kinda confused about, kind of an attitudeof what's the big deal?I'm not gonna have any problems with this.It makes sense why, because they give their background. It's like OK, yeah, I can see why you would think that way.I sort of thought the same way, myself, being that I'm an engineer by degree, but let's get to this message and then you'll seeand I wanna break down why this person's logicis actually wrong, when it comes to the markets and trading. This person says "I have a science degree"and have a mathematics modeling and statistics background."I am just starting to look at stocks"as a way to make money."How is math emotional?"That's a very, very good question. How is math emotional?I mean, that's a joke, I'm not that bad at math. That wasn't very emotional. How is that stuff emotional?Very, very good point.Again, you look at he's got a backgroundin mathematics and statistics, and all that sort of stuff. He's very familiar with numbers and math."Yeah, but stocks, it's all numbers, anyways."It is all numbers, but here's the problem with these numbers.Yeah, you have numbers at the forefront of thingsand there's nothing wrong with that. But the question becomeswhat's the context of these numbers? What's back behind these numbers right here? What you have to ask yourself is the mentality going in.Mentality going in to what?In regards to money.Right here, behind the numbers, is money. That's the numbers we're talking about, money.Again, "Well, how can it be non-emo,"I mean it's just money."That's the next layer hereis how are you viewing this money?Let's first just start off with hard work.If you had to work hard for that money, how are you gonna view those numbers?I would assume that you're not gonna really wanna lost that. You're not gonna want to have thatjust disappear, because why?You worked hard for that money which, yes, is a number. What about this word?Success. You want to have success with that money, which is a number. Two key things here.Success and hard work.If that is the background context of the numbers, that's why trading is so emotional.Because you have worked hard for this money, which is a number, and because you've worked hard for it,of course you're not gonna wanna lose it.If you're somebody that's ambitious, that wants to havesuccess with money, again, a number, then you wanna have success.Maybe some competitive nature comes out. When you have competitive nature, that's wherethe adrenaline is, that's where you get emotional. You get fired up, you wanna be successful. Now all of a sudden, these numbers, there's a lot more to it.With that being said, maybe numbers to you means,we'll call this one fire, meaning"Yeah, this money, I didn't really work hard for it."It just kind of..."Let's just say I inherited it, for example."I inherited it."I didn't work hard for it."I don't really need it."(mumbles)In that situation, you really have no attachment to thatmoney cause you didn't work hard for it, anything like that.In that situation, maybe these numbers, you just view itas a gambling situation, where you're like"Yeah, whatever, it's not emotional."In that situation, I will agree that the numbersaren't gonna be, the math is not gonna be very emotional.Because there's just not really any attachment to it.What about if you're just like"Hey, I'm here to have fun."We'll call, I guess, the two Fs right here.If you're falling into one of the two Fs, then yeah,"Hey, I'm just here to have fun."I am good at math, I realize that instead of paying"for a plane ticket to fly out to Las Vegas to gamble,"I can just sit at home in my basement in my underwear"and have fun with my money, which is a number."(mumbles)How is that, maybe it's emotional, but it's a thrilling emotional,it's an excitement emotional. That's fine, that's fair, too.Really, the whole point of this is you have to distinguishwhat your mentality going into all this is.I'm assuming this guy, he seems pretty ambitious,so I'm assuming that he's kind of in the success camp.I don't know if he worked hard for those funds.I have no idea.I'm assuming through his job, so putting in a lot of time, but I don't wanna make that assumption.I guess this is an assumption, too.I feel pretty confident with success. For you, and he never gave me his name, or she never gaveme his name, so I don't know this person, but you better believe these numbersare gonna be very emotional.Because you want to succeed. You want to have success. You want to grow that money. In order to grow money over timeyou need to have a strategy. You need to be able to put together plans that make sense. In that journey, you're not gonna want to be losing money. You're not gonna wanna be doing things that cause youto think that you're not having success.Numbers, at its core, they're just numbers. They're just made up at the end of the day. They're trivial. But, when you start to look at the background contextbehind them, there is a lot more that goes into it,and that's why you can't walk into this,I don't care if you have a PhD in statistics, math, and anything else that involves a whole lot of numbers. If you're a mathematician, think about it,that's why the markets are so cruel.Because to get to those levels, you gotta be ambitious, you have to want success. You're gonna want success with these numbers that happento be the stock market, that all happen to be money,so you will feel emotion with it.That's what you gotta ask yourself iswhat is my goal going in here?If your goal is either fire or fun, cause you're just looking,"Whatever, it doesn't matter, I didn't work hard for it"so if it goes up in fire, who cares?"Or you just say "I'm saving a plane ticket to Las Vegas,"then those are kind of apples and orange type discussion. But at the end of the day, when it comes tothe stock market, the numbers can become quite emotional. If you are out there trading along currently, and maybe are in the market looking for a community to jointo assist you in your trading or to just help you, give you another set of eyeballs, then I do havea private trading community where you can trade alongsideme and other experienced traders. What you see popping up on the screen right now is bothan newsletter. The other image that has popped up isa behind-the-scenes tour, where you can see exactly whatis going to be contained within the community.I take you through, like I said, a behind-the-scenes tourof everything, and that way you'll know preciselywhat you are getting when you join.Definitely check that stuff out if you are interestedand thinking about wanting to join a
